GYO SUMMER PROGRAM Many families in the Elmont Union Free School District have difficulty finding and/or affording suitable summertime settings for their children while they work to support their families. In response, Gateway Youth Outreach provides the children with educational and recreational programs for five weeks in the summer. This assistance reduces stress for working parents that could be endured in finding appropriate care during these difficult summer months. As an added bonus to the program, children participate in organized activities such as team sports, arts and crafts, quiet games and similar activities working to promote positive social interaction and organizational skills. Should the trained counselors on staff recognize that a child may be having difficulties participating, the parent can be notified and the issue or issues addressed. The agency has found over the tears that parents, especially busy ones, appreciate the assistance and direction of a counselor in addressing needs and welcome the possibility of developing a less antagonistic relationship with their children.
